While exploring the region in 1772, as part of an expedition to establish a series of missions in the area, Spanish Missionary Juan Crespi came across a small river. Taken by its meandering beauty, he named it the San Benedicto, in honor of his beloved Saint Benedict. Over time, the surrounding area became known as the San Benito Valley.
Driven largely by agriculture, and later, wine making, the region grew rapidly until it was granted county status by decree of Governor Newton Booth in 1874, which put San Benito County officially on the map. With its abundant natural resources and its close proximity to San Francisco, the county continued to flourish, attracting many with its small town charm, bustling commerce and uncomplicated way of life.
Today, San Benito County is home to more than 56,000 residents and a rich diversity of cultures. More than half of the county’s residents live in Hollister, the county seat, where the past and present merge in charming fashion. While agricultural activities have slowed, San Benito County is still vibrant with activity. The temperate climate, rolling scenery and genuine hometown feel draw many tourists to the area. In particular, the town of San Juan Bautista, and its historic mission which was founded in 1797, is a favorite destination for area travelers.
